Medical Spa
There are a great many innovative, new scientific beauty treatments that don’t quite require a medical doctor to perform, as plastic surgery or dermatological care would, but are more advanced and effective treatments rooted in medicine. Enter the medi-spa. What is a medical spa? A medical spa, or medispa is a hybrid, halfway between a medical office offering cosmetic-related treatments and a traditional spa. Medical spa treatments and medical spa services include skin peels among other skin treatments.
What Is A Medical Spa?
Medi-spas are a growing phenomenon in the United States—growing at a rate of around fifty percent per year. Medi-spas have taken the medical, healthcare and spa industries by surprise. Regulations vary from state to state as to what a medi-spa can perform, but medi-spas offer many medically sound cosmetic treatments in a pleasant setting, in addition to offering tremendous advantages in terms of cost and efficiency.
Medical Spa Services
Medi-spas come to be in various ways. Some may have started out as traditional spas, offering the typical menu of massage, facial and nail care. Others are offshoots of traditional clinical practice, offered through a dermatologist’s office or plastic surgeon’s office. Traditional spas have hired individuals specializing in treatments such as photofacials, botox, microdermabrasion, laser therapy and chemical peels. This expansion toward more healthcare-related services has led them to be called medi-spas. Medical practitioners, on the other hand, are increasing their revenues by expanding into areas traditionally offered purely by spas, such as massage and facials, creating a more relaxing environment, and integrating spa services with medically based treatments.
Medical Spa Treatments
Medi-spas are considered day treatment facilities by definition. You most likely wouldn’t see a healthcare professional for every type of treatment, but the facility is under the direction and supervision of a licensed healthcare professional. They offer services within the scope of what the staff are qualified to perform. These medical practitioners are typically dermatologists and plastic surgeons. However, the licensed healthcare professional could be from any healthcare specialty ranging from nurse practitioners to OB/GYNs.
The healthcare professional, while directing and supervising the facility, does not have to remain on the premises at all times let alone participate in all treatments offered by the facility. Typically, the individuals performing the various services such as photofacials, chemical peels, botox or laser therapy are licensed in their trade and would typically perform their specialty with greater skill and knowledge than the supervising healthcare professional anyway.
