The Two Types of Chemical Peels

Though the safer, more natural approach to rejuvenating tired or blemished skin is with an herbal peel, many patients want a more dramatic effect. These patients are often plagued with deep wrinkles or severe acne. For them, chemical peels may be the more desirable option. However, many do not realize that there are actually two types of chemical peels, which are both common and popular.

Beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) has fewer side effects and its results last a bit longer than those of alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). Both are effective, bur recent studies have shown that BHA is slightly superior to AHA. Both acids are derived from natural ingredients. AHA is found in sour milk and tomato juice. BHA is derived from a product found in aspirin.

These acids can also be found in facial washes and scrubs that can be bought in the health and beauty departments of most grocery stores. AHA is better known as glycolic acid, and BHA is salicylic acid.

It is important to consider all of your options before you decide to have a chemical peel. For more information about this and other cosmetic procedures, speak to your plastic surgeon today!
